No surprise, then, that it&#8217;s cold and overcast, with predictions of thunderstorms. If I think back across the year, then it feels like a very long year indeed, but the dunes by the mouth of the Don had a wonderful celebration in store.<\/p>\n<p>First, I realised that there was an orchid in the dunes.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tending.to\/blether\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_4377.png?resize=450%2C600&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"IMG 4377\" title=\"IMG_4377.png\" border=\"0\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This looks like a marsh orchid, one of the <i>Dactylorhiza<\/i>, but the usual dune sp. is much redder. Even better, though, after I obsessively photographed one or two, it turned out that I was there at just the right time to see lots of them\u2014\u2014\u2014there is always one week when they all come out.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/tending.to\/blether\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_4390.png?resize=600%2C450&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"IMG 4390\" title=\"IMG_4390.png\" border=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And as a final treat, one of the orchids had decided to bloom right in the middle of a patch of Birdsfoot-trefoil <i>Lotus corniculatus<\/i>.
